The heart is a major organ in our bodies, responsible for pumping blood around the body and helping to keep us healthy. Regular cardio, or aerobic exercise, improves your heart’s strength and function. It can also reduce your risk of cardiovascular diseases, including stroke, high blood pressure, and diabetes.
The best way to achieve optimal cardio health is to engage in 30-60 minutes of cardiovascular activity on a daily basis, three or more times a week. However, you may find it difficult to fit in a full 60-minute session each day, so many people are turning to shorter bouts of exercise throughout the day to get a cardiovascular workout in.
Doing cardio helps to build stronger muscles and make your heart more efficient at delivering blood, says David Pilkington, a senior clinical specialist at the Royal Society of Medicine. When your heart is able to do this, you’ll also experience improved blood flow, which can reduce the risk of blockages and fatty deposits that can lead to coronary disease, he says.
You’ll also improve your heart’s ability to regulate blood pressure, boost HDL (high-density lipoprotein) cholesterol, lower anxiety and stress, decrease blood proteins that contribute to blood clots and reduce your risk of developing heart disease, and manage diabetes.
